How exact age is worked out

The calculator counts complete years between your date of birth and the target date, then the remaining complete months, then the remaining days. It follows calendar rules, so months have their real lengths and leap years are handled correctly.

This is the same method used for official age checks such as school admission cut-offs, exam eligibility and retirement dates, which normally count completed years on a given date.

Worked example

Someone born on 15 August 1995 checking their age on 10 March 2026: from 15 August 1995 to 15 August 2025 is 30 complete years. From 15 August 2025 to 15 February 2026 is 6 months, and from 15 February to 10 March 2026 is 23 days (February 2026 has 28 days). The age is therefore 30 years, 6 months and 23 days.

Leap-year birthdays

People born on 29 February only have an exact birthday every four years. In non-leap years, legal practice differs by country; many treat 1 March as the date a full year is completed. If an exact rule matters, for example for a legal deadline, check the rule used by the authority concerned.
