Decimal versus binary units

Storage makers use decimal units: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB = 10^9 bytes. Operating systems often use binary units, where 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes and 1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, sometimes still labelled GB.

That is why a 1 TB drive (10^12 bytes) shows as about 931 GB: 10^12 / 1,073,741,824 = 931.32. No space is missing; the two counts use different units.

Bits and bytes

One byte is 8 bits. Network speeds are quoted in bits, so a 100 Mbps connection moves at most 12.5 MB per second. A 5 GB (5,000 MB) download takes at least 5,000 / 12.5 = 400 seconds, about 6 minutes 40 seconds, before protocol overhead.
