Density Calculator (Mass, Volume)

Solve ρ = m/V for density, mass or volume.

Solved density
7850 kg/m³
In g/cm³
7.85 g/cm³

Step-by-step working

  1. ρ = m / V = 7.85 / 0.001
  2. = 7850 kg/m³

Mathematical Formula

ρ = m / V; m = ρ V; V = m / ρ.

Overview & Explanation

Density is mass per unit volume.

How It Works

  • Pick the unknown.
  • Rearrange ρ = m/V.

Practical Applications

  • Material identification.
  • Shipping weight estimates.

Density, mass and volume

Density is mass divided by volume: rho = m / V. Rearranged, m = rho x V and V = m / rho, so knowing any two values gives the third. In SI the unit is kg per cubic metre; 1 g per cubic centimetre equals 1,000 kg per cubic metre.

Example: an aluminium block of 270 g that displaces 100 cubic centimetres of water has density 270 / 100 = 2.70 g/cm3, which matches the known value for aluminium. That kind of check can help identify a material.

Going the other way, 2 L (2,000 mL) of milk at about 1.03 g/mL has a mass of 2,000 x 1.03 = 2,060 g.

Floating and temperature

An object floats in a liquid that is denser than it. Ice at about 0.917 g/cm3 floats on water at about 1.00 g/cm3. Densities change with temperature: water is densest near 4 degrees C and is about 0.997 g/cm3 at 25 degrees C. Gases change much more with temperature and pressure.

Example 1: 7.85 kg in 1 L

Frequently Asked Questions

kg/m³ to g/cm³?
Divide by 1,000.
Water density?
≈ 1,000 kg/m³ at 4 °C.
Does density change with temperature?
Yes, most materials expand when heated.
How do I measure the volume of an irregular object?
Submerge it in a measuring cylinder of water and read how much the level rises. That rise is the object's volume.
Is specific gravity the same as density?
Specific gravity is density divided by the density of water, so it has no units. Aluminium's is about 2.7.
Why do my units give strange answers?
Mixing grams with cubic metres or kilograms with millilitres causes errors of 1,000 or more. Convert to one consistent system first.
