$58.66
Fuel Required: 16.07 gallons
Cost Per miles: $0.13

Mathematical Formula

Total Fuel Cost = (Trip Distance / MPG) × Gas Price per Gallon

Overview & Explanation

Computes total gas cost for driving trips using vehicle efficiency and fuel prices.

How It Works

  • Divides trip distance by vehicle fuel economy.
  • Multiplies required gallons by current gas station pricing.

Practical Applications

  • Budgeting driving vacations
  • Splitting gas money with passengers

The fuel cost formula

Fuel needed = distance / fuel efficiency, and cost = fuel needed x price per litre. Use the same units throughout, such as km, km/L and rupees per litre.

Example: a 450 km trip in a car that gives 15 km/L needs 450 / 15 = 30 L. At Rs 105 per litre that is 30 x 105 = Rs 3,150. A return trip doubles this to Rs 6,300, and split between three people each pays Rs 2,100.

Getting a realistic estimate

Published mileage figures are usually measured in test conditions, and real highway or city driving with air conditioning and luggage often gives less. Using your own average from recent fill-ups gives a better estimate. Fuel prices differ between states and change frequently, so enter the current local price.

If your car reports litres per 100 km, convert it with km/L = 100 / (L/100 km). For example, 6.67 L/100 km equals 15 km/L.

450 Mile Road Trip Gas Cost

Calculate gas cost for a 450 mile drive.

1

Gallons Required

450 / 28

= 16.07 Gallons
2

Total Fuel Cost

16.07 × $3.65

= $58.66

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I add a fuel cost safety buffer?
Yes, adding 10% accounts for idling, traffic congestion, mountain elevation gains, and regional gas price differences.
Does this include tolls and parking?
No. Fuel cost covers fuel only; add tolls, parking and other charges separately.
How do I convert US mpg?
1 US mpg equals about 0.4251 km/L, so 30 mpg is about 12.75 km/L.
Should I add a buffer?
Adding 10% for detours and traffic is a sensible way to budget.
