Standard Deviation Calculator

Calculate sample and population standard deviation, variance and mean of a data set with step-by-step working.

Sample SD (s)
2.1381
Population SD (σ)
2
Mean
5
Sample variance
4.5714
Population variance
4
Count
8

Step-by-step working

  1. Mean x̄ = 40 / 8 = 5
  2. Σ(x − x̄)² = 32
  3. Sample: s = √(32 / 7) = 2.1381
  4. Population: σ = √(32 / 8) = 2

Mathematical Formula

Mean x̄ = Σx / n. Population σ = √(Σ(x − x̄)² / n). Sample s = √(Σ(x − x̄)² / (n − 1)) (Bessel’s correction).

Overview & Explanation

Standard deviation measures how spread out values are around the mean. Use the sample formula when your data is a sample of a larger population.

How It Works

  • Compute the mean.
  • Sum squared deviations from the mean.
  • Divide by n (population) or n − 1 (sample) and take the square root.

Practical Applications

  • Statistics coursework.
  • Quality control and lab measurements.

What standard deviation measures

Standard deviation tells you how spread out values are around their mean. To calculate it: find the mean, subtract the mean from each value, square those differences, average them, and take the square root. For a population you divide by N; for a sample drawn from a larger group you divide by n − 1 (Bessel's correction), which slightly increases the result to correct for sampling bias.

A small standard deviation means values cluster tightly around the mean; a large one means they are widely scattered.

Worked example

For the values 4, 8, 6, 5 and 7, the mean is 6. The deviations are −2, 2, 0, −1 and 1, whose squares add to 10. Population variance is 10 ÷ 5 = 2, so σ = 1.414. Sample variance is 10 ÷ 4 = 2.5, so s = 1.581.

Interpreting the result

For roughly bell-shaped data, about 68 percent of values fall within one standard deviation of the mean and about 95 percent within two. Standard deviation is sensitive to outliers, so a single extreme value can inflate it; check your data for errors before relying on the figure.

Example 1: 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9

How it's calculated & sources

Mean x̄ = Σx / n. Population σ = √(Σ(x − x̄)² / n). Sample s = √(Σ(x − x̄)² / (n − 1)) (Bessel’s correction).

Frequently Asked Questions

Sample or population?
Use population if the data covers every member of the group; otherwise use sample (n − 1), which gives an unbiased variance estimate.
What is variance?
The square of the standard deviation — the average squared deviation from the mean.
Can SD be negative?
No. It is a square root of a non-negative quantity.
