Percentage of Marks Calculator

Find your exam percentage from marks obtained and total marks.

Percentage

Marks short of 100%

Step-by-step working

  1. 438 / 500 = 0.87600
  2. × 100 = 87.60%

Mathematical Formula

Percentage = (Marks obtained / Total marks) × 100

Overview & Explanation

The aggregate percentage is your total marks as a share of the maximum possible marks.

How It Works

  • Add marks of all subjects to be counted.
  • Divide by the maximum marks.
  • Multiply by 100.

Practical Applications

  • Board exam results (CBSE, GSEB).
  • Eligibility checks for admissions.

Calculating your percentage

Percentage = marks obtained ÷ maximum marks × 100. Scoring 432 out of 500 gives 432 ÷ 500 × 100 = 86.4%.

When subjects carry different maximum marks, add all marks obtained and divide by the total of the maximums. Do not average the individual subject percentages unless every subject has the same maximum, or the result will be skewed.

Board and university rules

Many boards and universities calculate an aggregate from a specific set of subjects. CBSE, for example, has commonly used the best five subjects for overall percentage, while university admissions may use only the main subjects or include practicals. Always check the rule used by the institution receiving your marks.

Converting a CGPA to a percentage is a separate calculation that depends on the institution's formula; CBSE has historically used CGPA × 9.5 for its grading system, but universities each publish their own conversion.

Example with different maximums

Suppose you scored 78 out of 100 in Maths, 85 out of 100 in Science and 40 out of 50 in a practical. Total obtained = 203, total maximum = 250, so the percentage is 81.2%. Averaging the three subject percentages (78%, 85%, 80%) would give 81%, slightly different because the practical carries less weight.

Example 1: 438 out of 500

Five subjects of 100 each.

1

Inputs

Marks obtained: 438 · Total marks: 500

= entered
2

Step 1

438 / 500 = 0.87600

3

Step 2

× 100 = 87.60%

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I average subject percentages?
Only when all subjects have the same maximum marks. Otherwise divide total marks by total maximum marks.
How do CBSE best-of-five percentages work?
Add the marks of the five chosen subjects, divide by 500, and multiply by 100.
Can percentage exceed 100?
Not if obtained marks are within the maximum; check the inputs.
Should I round my percentage?
Report it as required by the form; many forms ask for two decimal places, such as 86.40%.
Are grace marks included?
Use the final marks shown on your official marksheet.
