SGPA to CGPA Calculator

Combine semester SGPAs into a cumulative CGPA, weighted by credits if you have them.

Leave blank to weight semesters equally.

CGPA
8.15
Semesters counted
4

Step-by-step working

  1. (8.2 + 7.9 + 8.5 + 8) / 4 = 8.15

Mathematical Formula

CGPA = Σ (Cᵢ × SGPAᵢ) / Σ Cᵢ, where Cᵢ is the total credits of semester i (UGC CBCS guidelines). Without credits, CGPA = mean of SGPAs.

Overview & Explanation

Under the UGC Choice Based Credit System, CGPA is the credit-weighted average of semester SGPAs.

How It Works

  • Multiply each SGPA by that semester’s credits.
  • Add the products.
  • Divide by the total credits.

Practical Applications

  • Tracking cumulative performance.
  • Predicting final CGPA.

SGPA and CGPA

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) summarises one semester; CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) summarises all semesters so far. The correct way to combine them is a credit-weighted average: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × credits of that semester) ÷ Σ credits.

Example: semester 1 has an SGPA of 8.2 over 22 credits and semester 2 has 7.6 over 24 credits. CGPA = (8.2 × 22 + 7.6 × 24) ÷ (22 + 24) = (180.4 + 182.4) ÷ 46 ≈ 7.89.

Simple average versus weighted average

If every semester carries the same credits, the simple average of SGPAs gives the same answer. When credits differ, the simple average can be noticeably off: averaging 8.2 and 7.6 gives 7.90 instead of 7.89 here, and the gap widens when one semester has far more credits.

Some universities compute CGPA directly from every course's grade points and credits rather than from SGPAs; the result is the same if the SGPAs were calculated correctly.

Converting to percentage

Universities publish their own CGPA-to-percentage rules, for example multiplying by a fixed factor or using a formula such as (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. Use the formula on your university's grade card or ordinance, because employers and admission offices expect that official conversion.

Example 1: Four equal-credit semesters

Simple average.

1

Inputs

SGPA of each semester (comma-separated): 8.2, 7.9, 8.5, 8.0 · Credits of each semester (optional, comma-separated):

= entered
2

Step 1

(8.2 + 7.9 + 8.5 + 8) / 4 = 8.15

3

CGPA

Result

= 8.15

Example 2: Weighted by credits

Semesters with 20, 22, 24, 22 credits.

1

Inputs

SGPA of each semester (comma-separated): 7.5, 8.0, 8.8, 9.0 · Credits of each semester (optional, comma-separated): 20, 22, 24, 22

= entered
2

Step 1

Σ(Cᵢ × SGPAᵢ) = 20×7.5 + 22×8 + 24×8.8 + 22×9

3

Step 2

÷ Σ Cᵢ = 88 → 8.35

4

CGPA

Result

= 8.35

How it's calculated & sources

CGPA = Σ (Cᵢ × SGPAᵢ) / Σ Cᵢ, where Cᵢ is the total credits of semester i (UGC CBCS guidelines). Without credits, CGPA = mean of SGPAs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CGPA the average of SGPAs?
Only if every semester has the same credits. Otherwise it is the credit-weighted average.
Where do I find semester credits?
On your grade card or in the university syllabus/scheme for each semester.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Use your university’s official formula, e.g. GTU (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 or Gujarat University CGPA × 10.
Do failed courses count?
Usually the failed attempt or the improved grade is treated according to university rules; check your grade card.
Where do I find credits?
They are listed on each semester's marksheet or in your programme's syllabus.
