Mathematical Formula

Maturity = D × [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i] × (1 + i), where D = yearly deposit made by 5 April, i = rate / 100, n = years. Interest is compounded annually.

Overview & Explanation

PPF is a government-backed 15-year savings scheme. Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month and credited annually, so depositing before 5 April earns interest for the full year.

How It Works

  • Assume the yearly deposit is made before 5 April.
  • Each year: balance = (previous balance + deposit) × (1 + i).
  • After n years the closing balance is the maturity value.

Practical Applications

  • Tax-free long-term saving (EEE status).
  • Section 80C planning under the old regime.

Example 1: ₹1.5 lakh/year for 15 years at 7.1%

Maximum deposit.

1

Inputs

Yearly deposit (₹): 150000 · Interest rate (% p.a.): 7.1 · Duration (years): 15

= entered
2

Step 1

Each year: balance = (previous balance + 1,50,000) × (1 + 7.1/100)

3

Step 2

Repeated for 15 years (see table).

4

Maturity value

Result

= ₹40,68,209

Example 2: ₹50,000/year for 20 years at 7.1%

With one 5-year extension.

1

Inputs

Yearly deposit (₹): 50000 · Interest rate (% p.a.): 7.1 · Duration (years): 20

= entered
2

Step 1

Each year: balance = (previous balance + 50,000) × (1 + 7.1/100)

3

Step 2

Repeated for 20 years (see table).

4

Maturity value

Result

= ₹22,19,429

How it's calculated & sources

Maturity = D × [((1 + i)^n − 1) / i] × (1 + i), where D = yearly deposit made by 5 April, i = rate / 100, n = years. Interest is compounded annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the current PPF interest rate?
The government notifies it every quarter; it has been 7.1% p.a. for several quarters. Check India Post / NSI for the current quarter and enter it above.
Why deposit before 5 April?
Interest is computed on the minimum balance between the 5th and month-end, so a deposit by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months.
Is PPF maturity tax-free?
Yes. Deposits (old regime, 80C), interest and maturity are all exempt, the so-called EEE status.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits.
