Why compare unit prices
Packs of different sizes hide the real cost of a product. The unit price — price divided by quantity — puts them on the same scale. A 500 g pack at ₹120 costs ₹120 ÷ 0.5 = ₹240 per kg, while a 1 kg pack at ₹220 costs ₹220 per kg, so the larger pack is about 8% cheaper per kilogram.
Always convert both items to the same unit first: grams to kilograms, millilitres to litres, or count to a single piece. Comparing ₹ per 100 g is often easier for small items such as spices and snacks.
When the bigger pack is not the better deal
Bulk packs only save money if you use everything before it spoils or expires. Multi-buy offers ('3 for 2') should be converted to a unit price too: three ₹90 packs for ₹180 is ₹60 each. Occasionally a smaller pack on promotion is cheaper per unit than the large one, which is exactly what a unit-price check catches.
For products with different strengths, such as concentrated detergent, compare the cost per wash or per use rather than per gram.
