Estimates total bricks, cement bags, and sand required to construct masonry walls based on standard brick dimensions and mortar joint thickness.

A common way to estimate bricks

Start with the wall area: length x height, minus openings such as doors and windows. Then divide by the face area of one brick including its mortar joint. A modular brick of 190 x 90 x 90 mm with a 10 mm joint occupies 200 x 100 mm, or 0.02 square metres, so a single-brick-thick (100 mm) wall needs about 50 bricks per square metre.

Example: a 5 m by 3 m wall is 15 square metres, needing 15 x 50 = 750 bricks. Adding 5% for breakage and cutting gives 787.5, rounded up to 788.

What changes the count

A wall that is one brick length thick (about 200 mm) uses roughly twice as many bricks per square metre. Non-modular local bricks, thicker joints and patterned bonds all change the numbers, so measure the actual bricks you are buying before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bricks are needed for 1 cubic meter of brickwork?
Approximately 500 standard modular bricks (190x90x90 mm with 10mm mortar) are needed per cubic meter of brickwork.
How much wastage should I add?
5% is a typical allowance for straightforward walls. Walls with many corners, cuts or fragile bricks often need more.
Does this include mortar quantity?
The brick count accounts for the space joints take up, but cement and sand for the mortar are a separate calculation.
