How many tiles you need

Divide the floor or wall area by the area of one tile, including the grout joint, and then add wastage for cuts and breakage. Tile count = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint)) × (1 + wastage). Add 5 to 10 percent wastage for straight layouts and 10 to 15 percent for diagonal or herringbone patterns, which need more cuts.

Rooms that are not rectangles can be split into rectangles, calculated separately and added together.

Worked example

A 3.6 m × 3.0 m floor is 10.8 m². With 600 × 600 mm tiles and a 3 mm joint, each tile covers 0.603 × 0.603 = 0.3636 m², so you need 10.8 ÷ 0.3636 = 29.7, round up to 30 tiles. With 10 percent wastage, buy 33 tiles. If tiles come in boxes of 4, that is 9 boxes (36 tiles).

Buying tips

Check the batch and shade code on every box, because colour can vary between production runs. Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs; matching a discontinued tile later is often impossible.
