Final Exam Grade Calculator
Find the score you need on your final exam to reach a target course grade.
Step-by-step working
- Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) / w, w = 30%
- = (85 − 82 × 0.7) / 0.3 = 92%
Mathematical Formula
Overview & Explanation
Your course grade is a blend of the current grade and the final; solving for the final gives the score needed.
How It Works
- Convert final weight to a fraction.
- Subtract the weighted current grade from the target.
- Divide by the final weight.
Practical Applications
- Exam preparation planning.
How the required final score is found
If your final exam is worth a known share of the course, your overall grade is: overall = current grade × (1 − final weight) + final score × final weight. Rearranging gives the score you need: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final exam weight as a decimal.
This lets you see in advance whether a target grade is realistic and how much effort the final exam deserves.
Worked example
Your current grade is 78 percent and the final exam is worth 30 percent. To finish with 80 percent: needed = (80 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 84.7 percent. To get 90 percent you would need (90 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 118 percent, which is impossible without extra credit.
Tips
Make sure "current grade" already reflects all weighted work except the final. If your course drops the lowest test or has a minimum-score rule for the final, apply that separately, because the simple formula does not know about it.
Example 1: 82% now, want 85%, final 30%
Need 92%.
Inputs
Current grade (%): 82 · Target course grade (%): 85 · Final exam weight (%): 30
Step 1
Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) / w, w = 30%
Step 2
= (85 − 82 × 0.7) / 0.3 = 92%

Example 2: 70% now, want 90%, final 20%
Unreachable.
Inputs
Current grade (%): 70 · Target course grade (%): 90 · Final exam weight (%): 20
Step 1
Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) / w, w = 20%
Step 2
= (90 − 70 × 0.8) / 0.2 = 170%

How it's calculated & sources
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − w)) / w, where w = final weight / 100.
