GPA Calculator (4.0 Scale)

Calculate your credit-weighted GPA on the standard US 4.0 scale from letter grades and credits.

A+/A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 …

GPA (4.0 scale)
3.36
Credits counted
12

Step-by-step working

  1. Points: A(4)×3 + B+(3.3)×4 + A-(3.7)×3 + C(2)×2
  2. GPA = Σ(points × credits) / Σ credits = 3.36

Mathematical Formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) / Σ credits; A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D− = 0.7, F = 0.

Overview & Explanation

The 4.0 scale is used by most US colleges; each letter maps to grade points weighted by course credits.

How It Works

  • Map letters to points.
  • Multiply by credits.
  • Divide by total credits.

Practical Applications

  • Semester and cumulative GPA.
  • Applications abroad.

How GPA is calculated

Grade point average is a credit-weighted average of your grade points. Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, add those products, and divide by the total credits: GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits. On the common 4.0 scale an A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1 and F is 0, with plus and minus grades in between at many universities.

Weighting by credits matters: a 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit one.

Worked example

Courses: Math A (4 credits), Physics B+ (3.3 points, 4 credits), English A− (3.7 points, 3 credits) and a lab B (3 points, 1 credit). Weighted points are 16 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 3 = 43.3 over 12 credits, so GPA = 3.61.

Different grading scales

Indian universities usually use a 10-point CGPA scale, and converting to a 4.0 GPA is not a simple ratio; foreign admissions offices often ask for an official conversion from WES or a similar body. Check how your target institution treats repeated courses and pass/fail credits, because policies differ.
