Inflation Calculator (Future Cost)

See how much something will cost in future at a given inflation rate, and how purchasing power erodes.

Future cost
179084.77
Today's money's future buying power
55839.48
Total price rise
79.08%

Step-by-step working

  1. Future cost = 100000 × (1 + 6/100)^10 = 179084.77

Mathematical Formula

Future cost = Today × (1 + i)^t; purchasing power of today’s amount = Today / (1 + i)^t.

Overview & Explanation

Inflation compounds: prices grow by the inflation rate every year.

How It Works

  • Grow the cost at the inflation rate.
  • Discount to find future purchasing power.

Practical Applications

  • Education and retirement goal planning.

How inflation adjustment works

Inflation is the general rise in prices over time, which means the same amount of money buys less. To find the future cost of something, compound today's price by the inflation rate: future cost = present cost × (1 + inflation)^years. To find what a future amount is worth in today's money, divide instead.

In India, the Consumer Price Index published by the Ministry of Statistics is the main inflation measure; retail inflation has averaged roughly 5 to 6 percent a year over the last decade, though individual items such as education and healthcare have often risen faster.

Worked example

A college course costing 10,00,000 today, with education inflation of 8 percent, will cost 10,00,000 × 1.08^15 ≈ 31,72,000 in 15 years. Going the other way, 1 crore received 25 years from now at 6 percent inflation is worth about 1,00,00,000 / 1.06^25 ≈ 23,30,000 in today's money.

Why it matters for planning

Savings that earn less than inflation lose purchasing power every year even though the balance grows. When you set retirement or education goals, inflate the target first and then work out how much to invest. Use a conservative (slightly higher) inflation rate for long goals so you are not caught short.

Example 1: ₹1 lakh in 10 years at 6%

Future cost ≈ ₹1.79 lakh.

1

Inputs

Cost today: 100000 · Inflation rate (% p.a.): 6 · Years: 10

= entered
2

Step 1

Future cost = 100000 × (1 + 6/100)^10 = 179084.77

3

Future cost

Result

= 179084.77

Example 2: $50,000 in 20 years at 3%

US-style inflation.

1

Inputs

Cost today: 50000 · Inflation rate (% p.a.): 3 · Years: 20

= entered
2

Step 1

Future cost = 50000 × (1 + 3/100)^20 = 90305.56

3

Future cost

Result

= 90305.56

How it's calculated & sources

Future cost = Today × (1 + i)^t; purchasing power of today’s amount = Today / (1 + i)^t.
