Mathematical Formula
Overview & Explanation
Macronutrient calculation assigns calorie goals across protein, carbs, and fats based on fitness objectives.
How It Works
- Sets protein ratio.
- Allocates healthy fat grams.
- Fills remaining calorie budget with carbs.
Practical Applications
- Bodybuilding diet prep.
- Keto / Low-carb planning.
How macros are calculated
Macronutrients are protein, carbohydrate and fat. Start from your daily calorie target, then split them by percentage and converts each share into grams. Protein and carbohydrate supply about 4 kcal per gram and fat about 9 kcal per gram, so 30 percent of 2,000 kcal from fat is 600 kcal, which is 600 / 9 = 67 g.
A common balanced split is 30 percent protein, 40 percent carbohydrate and 30 percent fat. Endurance athletes often use more carbohydrate; people trying to keep muscle while losing fat often raise protein to around 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg of body weight.
Worked example
For 2,200 kcal with a 30/40/30 split: protein 660 kcal ÷ 4 = 165 g, carbohydrate 880 kcal ÷ 4 = 220 g, and fat 660 kcal ÷ 9 = 73 g. Spread over three meals, that is about 55 g of protein per meal, which you could get from a mix of dal, paneer, eggs, chicken or tofu depending on your diet.
Practical tips
Hit your calorie and protein targets first; the exact carb-to-fat ratio matters much less for most people. Keep fat above roughly 20 percent of calories for hormone health, and get most carbohydrate from whole grains, fruit, vegetables and legumes for fibre.
