Splitting the bill and tipping norms

When a group splits a bill, add the tip to the total first and then divide, so everyone pays the same share of the tip. For a ₹3,600 bill with a 10% tip split four ways, the total is ₹3,960 and each person pays ₹990.

Tipping customs vary widely. In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is typical at sit-down restaurants. In India, 5–10% is common where no service charge is added. In Japan tipping is generally not expected. Check the bill for an included service charge before adding a tip, so you do not pay it twice.

How the tip is calculated

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage: tip = bill × percent ÷ 100. The total is bill + tip, and dividing by the number of people gives each person's share. Some people tip on the pre-tax amount and others on the total; the calculator uses whatever bill figure you enter.

Customs vary a lot. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is normal at sit-down restaurants. In India, many restaurants add a service charge, which customers are not obliged to pay under consumer guidelines, and tipping 5 to 10 percent is common where none is added. In Japan tipping is generally not expected.

Worked example

A dinner bill of 2,850 shared by 4 people with a 10 percent tip: the tip is 285, the total is 3,135 and each person pays 783.75. Rounding up to 785 each leaves a slightly larger tip of 290.

Quick mental shortcut

To find 10 percent, move the decimal point one place left. Double it for 20 percent, or add half of it for 15 percent. On a 2,850 bill, 10 percent is 285, so 15 percent is about 428 and 20 percent is 570.
