Overview & Explanation

Finance Bill 2026 proposed no change in personal income-tax rates; FY 2025-26 slabs continue. The new regime is the default; you may opt for the old regime if your deductions make it cheaper.

How It Works

  • Subtract the standard deduction (salaried) and, for the old regime, your deductions.
  • Apply the slab rates.
  • Apply the Section 87A rebate (with marginal relief in the new regime).
  • Add surcharge for incomes above ₹50 lakh, with marginal relief.
  • Add 4% health and education cess.

Practical Applications

  • Choosing a regime at the start of the year.
  • Estimating TDS and advance tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did income tax slabs change for FY 2026-27?
Finance Bill 2026 proposed no change in personal income-tax rates; FY 2025-26 slabs continue.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?
Under the new regime, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh gets a full 87A rebate (salaried people effectively ₹12.75 lakh after the ₹75,000 standard deduction). Special-rate income such as capital gains is not covered.
What is marginal relief?
If taxable income slightly exceeds ₹12 lakh, tax is capped at the amount by which income exceeds ₹12 lakh, so you never pay more tax than the extra income.
Which regime is better?
The old regime only wins when your deductions are large. Compare both results above.
Does this include capital gains?
No. This calculator handles normal slab-rate income. Capital gains taxed at special rates need separate computation.
